No End of Sleep (2021) brings together a minimum of two dimensions: the outside world that we perceive as reality, and the invisible, inner workings of human life. Digital film stills are printed on velvet fabric, referencing past occurrences. The drawings on top are intuitive reactions to the still images, born from a state of remembrance. My work tends to be centered around a material’s surface, its ability to lend multi-dimensionality to what is drawn onto it, and its capacity to elevate these markings. The oil pastels not only color but also scratch the velvet’s surface, which adds to the impression that the drawing is a different level of reality and time than the one in the printed still image. The title derives from the sensation when one cannot tell dream from reality and vice versa. This condition seems legitimized by whatever came before, by continuity – similar to a movie, where one scene necessarily follows another. The continual mixing of dreams with memories with entirely imagined scenarios adds to this mode of perception of things that has lately been reinforced by the Covid-19 pandemic and the perceived endlessness of certain conditions it entails.
