Fugue in Magenta

Öl, Lack auf Aluminium

100 x 85 cm

Mohanad Adwan

In these works the painting process is reversed. Brushes are replaced by heavy-duty sanding machines which aggressively cut through the multilayered dried paint, occasionally revealing the aluminum surface underneath. The additive act of painting is followed by subtractive destruction –only through the mechanical grinding of the surface does the image come to light. An archaeological approach is exercised in which the paintings excavate the forgotten gestures of previously applied paint. The resulting composition is limited to revisiting a past framework. In a continuous state of flux, the play between addition and subtraction gives rise to new possibilities of becoming. The image emerges through this simultaneous process of negation and affirmation.
